Meter

Several metric systems, such as the International System of Units, use the meter (British English: metre) as their fundamental unit of length (SI).

The definition of a meter evolved as measurement techniques used in science advanced. The length of the path that light takes in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second is how it is now defined.

Feet

The foot is a unit of length in the Imperial/US metric system (abbreviated as ft or '). As the name suggests, it is also a measurement based on the human body. Since the 1950s, when the unit was established, it has exactly equaled 0.3048 meters:

1 ft = 0.3048 m = 304.8 mm

Many diverse cultures have used feet since the beginning of time, but their actual lengths varied. The foot was utilized, for instance, in:

Ancient Rome: 1 foot = 11.6 inches (295.7 mm). That was a standard foot, but in some provinces it could be as much as 13.2 inches (334 mm)
Greece: 1 foot = 10.6-13.8 inches (270 - 350 mm)
Indus cities during the Bronze Age: 1 foot = 13.2 inches (333.5 mm)
Egypt: the foot equivalent = 12 inches (304.8 mm)
